Nami Island Day Trip: Getting There, What to See, and How to Combine It

Nami Island (Namiseom) is a small, crescent-shaped island on the Han River in Chuncheon, about 60 km northeast of Seoul. It's been a tourist destination since the 1960s but exploded in popularity after the 2002 broadcast of Winter Sonata, whose romantic scenes between Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo were shot along its metasequoia-lined central path. Even 20+ years later, that same path is the single most photographed spot in Korea outside of Seoul's palaces. The island calls itself the 'Naminara Republic' and collects a combined ferry-plus-admission 'visa' fee of 16,000 won for adults, 13,000 won for teens, 10,000 won for children. Open 7:30 AM to 9:45 PM; last ferry back around 10 PM. Season matters more here than at most Korean destinations. Early November is the peak season: the metasequoias go rust-red and the ginkgo lane turns solid yellow. Mid-April catches cherry blossoms. Winter (January-February) is striking after snow, which locals reveal is even better than autumn if you don't mind the cold. Summer is green and pleasant but the photos look generic. Mondays and Tuesdays are quieter than weekends, when tour buses from Seoul fill the ferry from 10 AM onward. How long to spend on the island: 2–4 hours is the sweet spot. Less and you'll feel rushed; more and you'll run out of things to do. Pair the rest of the day with one of the nearby attractions.

There are three transit options. Each makes sense in different scenarios. Subway (cheapest, slowest). Take the Gyeongchun Line (경춘선) from Cheongnyangni or Sangbong or Gwangwoon Univ. Station to Gapyeong Station. About 70–80 minutes from central Seoul, 2,850 won with T-money. From Gapyeong Station, take a taxi (5,000 won, 5 min) or local shuttle bus (Gapyeong City Tour Bus, 6,000 won day pass) to the Nami Island ferry terminal. Total one-way: 80–90 min, under 10,000 won. ITX-Cheongchun (fastest). Express train on the same line, leaves from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni. 55 minutes to Gapyeong, 4,800–6,000 won. Requires reserved seat—book on Korail app. Worth the extra 3,000 won on weekends when the regular Gyeongchun is packed. Organized day tour (easiest). Klook, Trazy, and similar platforms sell one-day tours combining Nami with Petite France and Garden of Morning Calm for 65,000–90,000 won including transport and admissions. Bus departs from Myeongdong or Hongdae around 8:30 AM, returns by 8 PM. Language: English, Chinese, or Japanese. Best if you want no logistics friction or you're traveling alone. The ferry crosses from mainland Gapyeong Pier to the island in about 5 minutes, leaving every 10–30 minutes. Included in your admission ticket. There's also a zipwire from mainland to island (80-second ride, separate 44,000 won fee)—fun but not faster. Return timing matters. The last ITX back to Seoul runs around 10 PM, but the last convenient one is typically 8:30 PM. Plan your exit around it.

The island is a 5.1 km loop, roughly 15 minutes across and 40 minutes around. You can walk the whole thing comfortably in 2 hours with stops, or rent a bike (4,000 won/hour) or small electric scooter for under an hour. Five things to prioritize. Metasequoia Lane is the landmark shot—a 500-meter avenue of tall conifers; arrive in the morning (before 11) or late afternoon (after 3) for the best light. Ginkgo Tree Lane glows yellow in late October through early November and is arguably more photogenic than the metasequoia in those weeks. The Central Avenue connects these and runs through fir and chestnut trees. UNICEF Hall and the Namiseom Book Cafe give the island an arts-and-children's-literature identity (the island is nominally a UNICEF-affiliated cultural zone). Decent rainy-weather shelter. There's also a small Winter Sonata stage—mostly for K-drama fans and Instagram. Food on the island. Naminara Republic has a few restaurants (Ethnic Asia, Riverside), cafés, and snack stands. Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken, the local Chuncheon specialty) is sold at several places; it's decent but overpriced at island prices. Better to save dinner for Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street if you can detour. Convenience stores are banned on the island, so bring snacks or accept the inflated prices. Tickets and entry tips. Bring your passport for foreigner discounts at some packaged tickets (combined Nami + rail bike saves ~5,000 won). Avoid buying individual tickets for each attraction; the Nami-Petite France-Italian Village bundle usually works out cheaper.

Nami alone is 3–4 hours on site plus 3 hours round-trip transit. Since you've come all the way to Gapyeong, here are three worthwhile add-ons—pick one. Petite France (프띠프랑스). A themed village built around The Little Prince, with European-style architecture and daily puppet shows. Five minutes by taxi from Nami or on the Gapyeong City Tour Bus route. Adult 13,000 won. It's genuinely kitsch but photographs beautifully and has been used as a K-drama filming location (My Love from the Star, Secret Garden). An adjacent Italian Village opened in recent years; combined ticket available. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Gapyeong Rail Bike (가평 레일바이크). A 40-minute ride on a four-wheeled pedal vehicle along a defunct railway over the Bukhan River. 2-person cart 30,000 won, 4-person 40,000 won. The scenery is the reason—mountain curves and river views particularly nice in spring and autumn. Book in advance on weekends; Gangchon station is about 15 minutes from Nami by taxi. Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원). A 30,000 m² botanical arboretum at the base of Mt. Chungnyeongsan. Not near Nami—about 30 minutes by car/bus—so only make sense if you have your own transport or take a tour. Adult 11,000 won, but worth it during the Light Festival (December–March) when the garden is illuminated at night. Pair with Nami on a dedicated botanical day, not squeezed into a three-stop itinerary. Realistic day: depart Seoul 8 AM, arrive Gapyeong 9:15, ferry to Nami by 9:45, explore until 1 PM, eat lunch at Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street (taxi 15 min), visit Petite France 3 PM, back on the train by 6 PM, Seoul by 7:30 PM. Don't try to add Garden of Morning Calm to this or something will get cut short.
